Weekly Rubbish Collection
What does the Council do with our weekly rubbish bags?
Rubbish collected by the
Council's contractors is not able to be sorted for possible recycling.
The bags are disposed of in a landfill where much of the rubbish does
not break down.
There are no landfills in the Papakura
District so we send all our rubbish out of the District.

Dog Strikes
Residents
should place their rubbish bags out at 07:00am on the morning of their
collection, NOT the night before to avoid animal “strike”. Residents who
repeatedly place their rubbish bags out the night before their
collection, causing animal strike, may be prosecuted.
If you
see a dog interfering with rubbish or any unattended do then please
phone Council with any details of the dogs appearance and home.
The
Council contractor cleans up dog/animal strike as they see it on the
daily collection route. Council requests
feedback if the strikes aren't being cleaned up by the end of any
given collection day.

What should I use to
put my rubbish in?
Papakura District
Council's residential rubbish collection in Takanini, Papakura,
Ardmore and Drury operates under a user pays system. Only the official
red rubbish bags will be accepted by the Council's contractors. Bags
are available in dairies, supermarkets, petrol stations and other
outlets in Papakura at a recommended retail price of $1.30 cents. This
covers the cost of the bags, their collection and disposal. Rubbish
collection days stay the same.

When should I put my rubbish out?
Place bags in clear view on the kerb just before 7:00am on your designated
collection day, but not the night before to avoid animal
strikes.
Collection in the town centre only starts at 6.30 am to avoid traffic
congestion
Businesses in the town centre may place bags out after 5pm on Wednesday
nights since there are no dogs there.

How much bagged refuse
can
I put out?
The
user pays system places no limit on the quantity of official red bags
that can be placed out at the kerb on rubbish days.

What does the yellow sorry sticker mean?
A
yellow “sorry” sticker on your rubbish bag means the bag
contained non-complying waste or was either too big or too heavy. See
below

What won't the Council collect?
For various reasons, the household waste collection at Papakura cannot
contain the following materials:
|
Non
conforming materials |
Reason |
Recommendation |
|
Grass, sawdust or any type of garden waste |
Organic matter causes more leachate in landfills |
Add to compost, use as mulch, pay private green-waste collector |
|
Hazardous wastes e.g. used oils, take-home oil packs,
pesticides
|
Landfills can not accept Hazardous waste that has not been treated
|
Take
these materials to the
Hazmobile
collection |
|
Recyclable materials that should be placed out for kerbside recycling |
The weekly collection provides for diversion from landfill. Glass in
large volumes is unsafe for collectors i.e. weight and cuts |
Residents are entitled to use up to three recycling bins at no cost |
|
Inorganic items e.g. broken appliances, old items from the garden shed
|
The weekly refuse collection is for household waste from rubbish bins in
the kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, office etc. |
Store inorganic items for the annual inorganic collection each year |
|
Hot or warm ash |
Safety risk to collectors. May cause a fire in the truck, Transfer
Station or landfill |
If
from untreated timber, add to compost or mulch, if treated take to the
Hazmobile |
|
Liquids of any sort |
Road hazard, landfills are for solid waste only. Causes an environmental
hazard if it leaks into storm water |
If non
hazardous place on garden or grass, or flush it down the toilet, if
hazardous take to the
Hazmobile
collection |
|
Bags weighing over 15kg |
Safety issue for collectors |
Reconsider what is being disposed of as most household refuse weighs
less than 7 kg per bag. Use more bags |
