Waste Management Weekly Rubbish Collection
Transfer Station
Rubbish Collection What does the Council do with our weekly rubbish bags? Rubbish collected by the Council's contractors is not able to be sorted for possible recycling. The bags are disposed of in a landfill where much of the rubbish does not break down. There are no landfills in the Papakura District so we send all our rubbish out of the District. Residents should place their rubbish bags out at 07:00am on the morning of their collection, NOT the night before to avoid animal “strike”. Residents who repeatedly place their rubbish bags out the night before their collection, causing animal strike, may be prosecuted. If you see a dog interfering with rubbish or any unattended do then please phone Council with any details of the dogs appearance and home. The Council contractor cleans up dog/animal strike as they see it on the daily collection route. Council requests feedback if the strikes aren't being cleaned up by the end of any given collection day. What should I use to put my rubbish in? Papakura District Council's residential rubbish collection in Takanini, Papakura, Ardmore and Drury operates under a user pays system. Only the official red rubbish bags will be accepted by the Council's contractors. Bags are available in dairies, supermarkets, petrol stations and other outlets in Papakura at a recommended retail price of $1.60. This covers the cost of the bags, their collection and disposal. Rubbish collection days stay the same. When should I put my rubbish out? Place bags in clear view on the kerb just before 7:00am on your designated collection day, but not the night before to avoid animal strikes. Collection in the town centre only starts at 6.30 am to avoid traffic congestion Businesses in the town centre may place bags out after 5pm on Wednesday nights since there are no dogs there. How much bagged refuse can I put out? The user pays system places no limit on the quantity of official red bags that can be placed out at the kerb on rubbish days. What does the yellow sorry sticker mean? A yellow “sorry” sticker on your rubbish bag means the bag contained non-complying waste or was either too big or too heavy. See below What won't the Council collect? For various reasons, the household waste collection at Papakura cannot contain the following materials:
Transfer Station Council own/manage the Transfer Station? No. It is operated by a private company. What does the Transfer Station accept? It accepts most forms of waste, except hazardous waste. These are then taken to either recycling outlets and/or landfill for disposal. Does it cost money to dump our rubbish there? Yes. The fees depend on the volume of rubbish you have. There are a number of transfer stations in the Auckland region which provide another option for rubbish disposal. Most of these are privately owned and operated so you will need to contact them directly to check what is accepted, confirm opening hours and check what fees may apply.
For information on opening hours and charges, please contact the Transfer Station on 09 299 8153. |
