Walking and Cycling Strategy

Walking and cycling are important and often overlooked modes of transport. Papakura District Council is committed to making it easier for the people of the District to walk and cycle – to work, for recreation and for exercise. On Monday 25 September 2006, the Council formally adopted the Walking and Cycling Strategy.  This document outlines the Council’s commitment and gives an overview of focus areas and priorities for action.

Papakura is a compact and mostly flat district that lends itself well to both walking and cycling.  Schools, businesses and shopping areas are spaced throughout the district.  The health benefits of including these gentle forms of exercise in daily routine are well known.

Most cycling and walking journeys in the district currently seem likely to be relatively short – between 1km and 5 km.  The actual number of such trips declined between 1996 and 2001, though employment trends that enable people to live and work within the district may reverse this in coming years.  School-age children are often brought to and from school by car, though a majority have said they would be happy to walk or cycle.

Papakura District Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy outlines the Council’s commitment to walking and cycling as important modes of transport and recreation.  It gives an overview of focus areas and priorities for action in order for Papakura to have environments and systems that support and encourage safe walking and cycling.

Priorities for the Council focus around local residents being able to walk and cycle for both transport purposes and for recreation.
