Road Safety in Papakura

The Road safety section of the Council was established to promote and encourage road safety within the District by facilitating regional campaigns and focusing on particular road safety issues, such as child restraints and youth and alcohol.

The Council's Road Safety Co-ordinator works supporting community groups and residents of Papakura in road safety initiatives, and running road safety projects in conjunction with groups such as ACC and Land Transport NZ..

The Council has several road safety projects this year addressing the District’s main road safety issues, including intersection safety, cycle safety, speed issues and pedestrian safety.

Road Safety at Intersections

A new brochure produced by Papakura District Council’s Road Safety Unit aims to help reduce the incidence of intersection crashes in the District.

Crash statistics show a high proportion of crashes in the District occur at intersections, and per head of population the District has significantly more crashes than other similarly-sized Districts. The most recent figures from Land Transport New Zealand show 172 crashes occurred at intersections.

The intersections that feature most often in accident reports to Land Transport New Zealand are Spartan Road/Great South Road in the Takanini motorway interchange; Averill Road – with many crashes involving cars pulling out of the supermarket car park; East Street, the Beach Road/Elliott Street intersection and the crossroad intersection of Grove Road and Old Wairoa Road.

Significant numbers of Manukau and Franklin residents are also involved in crashes in Papakura District: though 53 per cent of drivers involved in such crashes in Papakura in 2004 were locals, another 42 per cent were from Franklin or Manukau.

The brochure is available online.
