The
Council Parking Service officer can help
members of the public involved
in parked vehicle disputes. Here are some of the more common examples,
and how the Council can help.
Vehicles are not allowed to park within one metre of, or over a vehicle
entrance. If someone has parked across your vehicle entrance and you are
unable to enter or exit a property, you need to contact the
Customer
Services Centre
or telephone 09 295 1300. It is illegal to park
over your own, or any other vehicle entrance.
One of our
team will take your contact details, the location of the problem and of
the offending vehicle, and pass these details immediately to the Parking
Service Officer who will attempt to remedy the situation.
In the case of vehicles like cars, motorbikes and vans, there is no time
limit as to how long they can stay parked outside a property without
being moved, unless they are on a restricted parking space (ie. P5, P10,
P30, etc). Trailers and caravans can park on the road (as long as they
are registered and warranted) for up to seven days without being moved.
If there is
a vehicle that has been parked outside your house for an unusual amount
of time and you’re concerned about it, check with the Police to see if
the vehicle has been reported stolen. If there’s no warrant and or
licence, contact our Customer Services Centre or telephone 09 295 1300 as
the vehicle may be abandoned.
All vehicles, trailers and caravans must display a current warrant and
registration to be parked on, or travel on the road. Failure to do so
can incur a fine, issued by either Parking Wardens or the Police.
Vehicles
that are unwarranted or unlicensed, and that appear to be abandoned will
not be towed immediately. The Council’s Parking Services will attempt to
contact the vehicle's owners to give them the opportunity to remove the
vehicle first. This is a requirement under the Local Government Act
1974, Section 356.
Unlicensed or unwarranted vehicles being used (driven or ridden) on the
road will not be dealt with by the Council’s Parking Services. You need
to contact the Police.
