Papakura is host to
the dramatic and effective national road safety campaign focussing on
the chances motorists take at intersections. Dubbed the “wheel of
risk” by local road safety staff, the old-fashioned lottery wheel
features sections marked off with “minor crash”, “major crash”, “death”,
“near miss” and a small section marked as “miracle”.
In national TV
advertising the wheel is spun by a menacing character as drivers take
chances at a busy intersection.
In Papakura, the wheel
will be placed in the Town Centre and Police will be passing
out intersection awareness information to pedestrians and motorists.
Above, Constables Mark Cleary (front) and Andrew Heath display some of
the material that will be available.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community group and each year in
September, Papakura District Council hosts the annual Community
Volunteer Awards to recognise the work volunteers do.
The awards acknowledge the work done by clubs, organisations and
individuals in the district and the role played by the volunteers who
work selflessly to make a difference. Awards
are based on nominations sent in by community groups and individuals.

It's a green-out!
The Royal Commission on Auckland Governance is looking at how Auckland
runs and what changes would make things work better.
Following a consultation
period and a series of hearings throughout Auckland, the commission is
evaluating information to develop its recommendation to the Government.
Many Papakura residents took the time to make submissions on the issue
and their passionate response was noted by commission members
